Joining ARA as a foreigner?

In ARA, we each year accept a number of rowers who know no or just limited Danish.

Here, Adrian shares some of his experiences from joining ARA in 2023.

Joining Roklubben ARA without really knowing the language, or what to expect has been a unique challenge, but the community's welcoming and patient nature has made all the difference.
Each member brings their own experience and lessons to the boat, which has given me a more nuanced understanding of Denmark than you might gather from the press or social media expat groups. Over time, I've not only honed my rowing skills but also gained a deeper insight and appreciation of Danish culture.
If one piece of advice holds true, it's that joining a club is one of the best ways to become part of the social landscape.

There were a few thing which came a bit as surprises after Adrian had joined the club. He highlights:

  • you don’t need any special equipment
  • it can be mentally challenging but in a constructive way, once you start going on long rowing sessions.
  • it’s all about proper technique(more legs than anything else) and being in sync. You keep on learning. Most people can learn it.
  • it requires consistency and a long-term commitment, but because each trip takes several hours, and because the fact that you always rows with others creates a tightly-knit community which you need to get to know by participating in social events and team bonding.
